Jonathan Culbreath

I was raised in a family of six very musical children, in the Sacramento valley of Northern California. My siblings and I performed together in many different settings, playing classical chamber music together or with other young string musicians and keyboardists, orchestral music in several youth and regional symphonies, and traditional folk music in many different settings.

 

From a young age, I developed skills at the piano, also picking up the organ and harpsichord, as well as the violin and the viola. But my first musical love was always the piano. As a teenager, I participated and was awarded second place in a competition for youth, sponsored by the North State Symphony of California, as well as first place in a similar competition sponsored by the Paradise Symphony. In addition, as a music student I was awarded high-level certificates of merit for excellence in keyboard technique, music theory, and ear training.

In college, I was extremely active as a piano and organ accompanist for the college choir, which performed in concerts and sang at regular religious services in the campus chapel. In addition, I volunteered as a pianist for various student choirs and ensembles, and performed in instrumental chamber groups and as a soloist at college events. I was also a vocalist in several of the same college choirs, and regularly sang at concerts and events both on and off campus. In addition, I was often consulted to play at weddings and funerals and even to direct the music for such events. For two years during college, I taught online courses in music theory and appreciation to students in middle school and high school.

I am regularly consulted to play the piano, the harpsichord, and the organ at concerts, weddings, funerals, liturgical services, and other events. You can see some of my performances in the videos on this page.
